WHAT'S NEW AT LIFTING THE VEIL

Added December 29, 2011.

The database of peer reviewed journal articles now exceeds 500 entries. This database will continue to grow as time permits. Be sure to check the Lifting the Veil Facebook page for more details, as the Facebook page will be replacing this "What's New" on or around New Years Day.

Be sure to check the Lifting the Veil Blog, which is frequently updated. This is where I hammer out potential future articles for this site. Also, in keeping with the times, the new Facebook page is eventually taking the place of this "What's New." I believe that New Years Day may be an appropriate time to make that transition.

Lifting the Veil now has a Facebook page to help keep readers updated.

I have completely updated my article on Reunification Plans. This is among the most popular of my original articles, if the number of web sites that have "lifted" it, in some cases without any attribution whatsoever, is to be taken as an indication. The original article, written in 1997, is left online and is available here for historical reasons. In this updated article, which is considerably longer than the original, I explore the role of child support and revenue maximization in foster care as barriers to the reunification of families. Citations are provided that are current as of this year. This is part of my overall effort to freshen up Lifting the Veil overall.

A new database of peer reviewed articles is online, courtesy the power of Delicious. Topics include foster care, emancipation, outcomes, psychotropic drug administration, Native and Aboriginal child welfare practice, etc. All links lead to complete articles drawn from credible sources such as Family Court Review, Stanford Law & Policy Review, Pediatrics, Children and Youth Services Review, Cardozo Law Review, various State Bar Associations, among many others.

I've finally staked my claim to blogspace. See the new Lifting the Veil Blog at blog.com. This allows me the flexibility of offering commentary and observations without the need for citations.

Little Angel Bird: Reflections on a Young Girl's Death in Alberta

The untimely death of a 21-month-old girl in foster care in Alberta is examined amidst the backdrop of the globalization of the child protection industry. An analysis of the assimilation era, in which Native and Aboriginal peoples were scooped up over the course of decades - ostensibly to serve their best interests is provided. The assimilation era eventually gave way to the child welfare era, during which the torch for rescuing children from their homes was in effect passed from the assimilationists to the social workers. The role of the Child Welfare League of America in promulgating the policies leading to the forced removal of Native children from their homes is examined in a global-historical context.

The article Eye on Kansas has been thoroughly updated to reflect recent developments. Included is a review of how privatization came to be promoted as a panacea certain to cure the documented ills of the child welfare system; the dissemination and promotion of ideas at industry trade conferences in some instances employing deliberate obfuscation; parallel developments outside of Kansas as privatization progressed, as well as recent legislative proposals for reforming the privatized system. Numerous references are provided with links to the majority of sources.
